5 Reasons Why EBAY Is Digging Its Own Grave

Ebay Coffin

ebay coffin

Online shopping giant, EBAY, is increasingly becoming unpopular with many Ebay store owners and sellers alike.

Interestingly enough they are some of Ebays biggest power-sellers!

Why is this happening?

EBAY is literally alienating small business, by penalizing sellers and forcing them to start an own online store with a shopping cart platform like BigCommerce.

Top 5 Reasons why EBAY is digging its own grave.

 - based on feedback from EBay businesses that are making the shift.

1. Increased Ebay Fees

According to many Ebay Powersellers, Ebay has increased its the overall selling fees by as much as 20%. The bottom-line profits of Ebay Businesses have been severely effected, with Ebay making a simple decision to change its fees structure.  It seems Ebay is becoming greedy by enticing sellers by lowering listing fees on the front end, but raising fees on the back end… which leads me on to the next point.

2. Ebay Business Vulnerability

Ebay business owners are realising that their profit margins and business models of selling on EBAY is very vunerable to any decision EBAY wish to make…yes it sounds a little like Big Brother doesn’t it. This applies to selling fees, listing rules, template designs, ebay search algorythm, just to name a few.

3. Limited Conversion Options

When you compare some of the selling functionality of an Ebay Store to an online store platform like Bigcommerce. Ebay is quiet limited in the following areas.

-No product upgrade options (color, size, specs, etc)
Upselling-Poor Upselling.
-Poor social media integration
-No Live Chat for online customer service
-No Coupon Code promotion functionality
-No Customer order discounts
-Limited template options to improve conversion

4. Poor Buyer Experience

The listing templates that Ebay provides make it difficult for sellers to provide a good buying experience for their customers.

When shopping online, customers love to be able to closely examine the product pictures in detail to see all the features, quality or condition of the product. Often there are only a few poor photos of the product, none of which you can zoom in to clearly see any detail or features of the product.

The templates also make it difficult to neatly display product videos & other information which a customer maybe interested in, you basically need to be a html programmer to get your pages looking professional.

5. Branding Difficulty For Your Business

The templates that Ebay provide for sellers are only designed to promote one brand, and theres no prizes for guessing who. If you look at an ebay product listing above the fold (without scrolling down), the only brand being clearly promoted…is EBAY. The Ebay templates make it difficult for Ebay store owners to differentiate there brand from their competitors brand.

Poor Branding Ebay Listing

These 5 items can not only effect the growth of an Ebay business, but it can seriously effect the bottom line of the business.

A business owner that made the move

Don’t just take my word for why Ebay Store owners are making the move.

A friend of mine, Jackie Stenhouse, recently switched her Cake Decorations business from an Ebay Store business model, to starting her very own online store called Cake Decorating Books and Supplies, using the Bigcommerce Shopping Cart platform.

So I asked Jackie a few questions to understand her experience with selling product through Ebay, and why she moved her business model to be based on an online store.

Cade:  Hi Jackie. Do you mind me asking why you decide to move your online business from Ebay to your new own Online Store recently?

Jackie: I have decided to build my own online store, because with ebay, your business is definately in their hands and is very vulnerable. Anyone can take you out simply by adding negative feedback and giving you poor scores. Also the fees are becoming over the top.

Cade: What are the benefits/advantages you expect to gain from having your own online store?

Jackie: The main advantage I expect to gain with my own store is to have the business in my hands 100%. You have to be so careful when writing your descriptions on ebay and you will get your products taken off if they don’t like what you have written.

Cade:  How have you found creating your own online store with Bigcommerce?

Jackie: Using Bigcommerce, I have found setting up my own store to be really easy. I am climbing rankings on google for a couple of my keywords, only a few weeks after going live, so they (bigcommerce) have definitely taken SEO seriously. There is also plenty of support and lots of videos (to help setup). If you can’t work something out, I simply send them an email and they reply within 24hrs.

So stay tune till next week, where I will be doing an in-depth review of the BigCommerce Shopping Cart platform

Online Shopping Statistics – Is Your Offline Business Suffering

online-shopping

Are you an Online Shopper?…Online Shopping

The Online Shopping Statistics says that its a fair chance that you are…. and so is your neighbor.

So why are so many businesses resisting to taking their business online with any real purpose, it doesn’t make sense, especially when you look at some of the stats compiled by a recent Price-Waterhouse-Coopers survey (+others):

According to these surveys:

  • 92 percent of Consumers use websites to compare prices
  • 76 percent of Consumers use websites to access and print coupons
  • 75 percent of Consumers purchase at least 1 products or services per month via the Internet
  • 70 percent of Consumers use mobile phones to find out where the nearest store is located
  • 70 percent of Consumers want to see what goods are in stock before going into the store
  • 26 percent of Consumers spend at least $500 per month via the Internet

Certainly these stats mirror my own shopping behaviors, and many people I know. The Internet certainly give us access to so much information at our fingertips, it has also supplied a whole new choice of products to the consumer.

Global Online Shopping Statistics

The evolution and the improvement of global supply chains has meant that international retailers are able to deliver to Australians (& other overseas consumers), more cost effectively and quickly, removing what was previously a major  barrier to online shopping for the consumer.

Global E-Commerce Sales are tipped to exceed 1 Trillion dollars US by 2013, with sales growth of 19% per year, which is nothing to be sneezed at. In my own opinion, companies which ignore these stats are leaving money on the table, and potentially risking their own future.

It stands to reason that consumers worldwide are changing their shopping habits, and are heading online to shop driven by lower prices, greater convenience and access to broader selection of product to choose from.

Australian Online Shopping Statistics

At home here in Australia, Online Shoppers are tipped to spend more than $21.7 billion in 2015, up from $13.6 billion this year. Business Success

Business Analysts are echoing that some sectors of the Australian offline retail industry are particularly at risk from the trend to shopping online offshore, including clothing, cosmetics, recreational/sporting products, footwear, gaming, books, and magazines. Analysts are predicting 44% of that is expected be spent at overseas web-sites.

Interestingly, these Online Shopping Statistics indicate that only 39% of Australian businesses have a web-site,  and only 32% of them use their site to sell products or services.

So in total, only around 12% of Australians businesses are using an e-commerce to transact with their customers. When you consider all the online shopping statistic above,  this it the most alarming stat for the bottom line of Australian business.

How to get your Business on the right side of these statistics

Taking your business online doesn’t need to be an ordeal.

How to Choose the Best Shopping Cart Software

ecommerce

Shopping Cart SoftwareWhenever you are trying to pick the best shopping cart software, it can seem like a very daunting task. Yet, it is one of the most important steps in creating a viable ecommerce company today.

While it might seem like it is going to be difficult to wade through all of the choices, you can eliminate some of the choices by determining what it is you need from the online shopping cart software.

When you have your list of all the things that you need from your software, you will be able to narrow your choices and find the one that is going to provide you with the best cart and service.

What Makes for the Best Shopping Cart Software?

1. Software Platform

First, you need to make sure that the software you are considering is going to be compatible with the platform you are using. Does it need to be Locally Hosted or can it be Externally Hosted in a combined hosting and software package.

2. Ease of Operation

You need to make sure that it is going to be easy for you to set up the store and make it look consistent with the rest of your site or blog. The Ecommerce templates that they offer should be attractive and you should be able to customize them to give the store a professional look that matches your brand.

3. Easy of Navigation for Customers

You also want to have easy operation on both ends of the spectrum. Your customers should also have an easy time of navigating the store and looking at photos and descriptions of the products you are selling. Buying should also be very easy from the site, and the best shopping cart systemswill make this happen. You never want your customer to have to jump through hoops just to buy something from you!

Ecommerce Customer

 4. Mobile Device Friendly

You will also want to make sure that the online shopping system is going to be able to work in the mobile world. Because so many people are using their iPhone, Android, iPad and other tablets today, you need to be able to reach this mobile crowd and make sure that your store is just as easy to buy from through those mobile devices.

Ecommerce Software

5. Ability to Handle Returns

The best ecommerce shopping cart software is also going to have the ability to handle returns. While you might not want to think about returns, they do happen. You need the software to make this as easy as possible for you as well as your customers. Happy customers – even if they returned one product – will still likely buy from your company and tell their friends about the pleasant experience.

6. SEO Optimized

If you want to do well and have people be able to find your store, you need to make sure that your online shops offer SEO Optimized in the pages. This will make it much easier for customers to find the products you are offering in the Search Engines. The best shopping cart software will make this easy for you.

7. Up-Selling Functionality

Another feature that is also worth considering whether the shopping cart has Up-Selling and Side-Selling functionality. This function will automatically suggest other related products to the customers during the ordering process to help increase the total order value and boost sales overall.

8. Try Before You Buy

While many companies claim to have the best shopping cart software reviews, they don’t always have the ability to back up their claims. Choose a company that offers a free trial of their shopping cart software so you can test it and make sure that it is the right one for your company.

Find a company that can do all of the above and more, and you will have the best shopping cart software for your ecommerce business.
